OUR HISTORY
Over the past two decades, DKYL has adapted its programming to the communities’ changing needs. As such, the programs have evolved and ranged from: leading adventure travel groups and journalist expeditions across Latin America, to building greenhouses, developing environmental workshops, and leading experiential learning programs for youth in USA and Peru.
Founded by Samoel Suarez, a coach in experiential education and a graduate in behavioral psychology, the initial version began in 2004 by leading social-tourism projects and journalistic expeditions for non-profit organizations. After a hiatus, the project was revived in 2013 with
Emily Melden, an expert in environmental education and public administration. Together, they launched the first “Travel project" program, initially establishing themselves as a for-profit organization in 2014.
Expanding across Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, and Argentina over the next few years, they combined adventure, social work, and collaborative projects, gaining insights into diverse cultural and social realities.
Engaging with various communities and witnessing transformative life experiences in early students guided the development of teachable programs.
This journey inspired a shift towards creating experiential education programs designed to empower young people to overcome barriers and access better opportunities, regardless of their background or socioeconomic status.
